Services/Security Tab

Purpose

This tab sets up the basic TCP/IP parameters for i-Mail to talk to other mail systems. It also enables/disables various server components of i-Mail.

Server Components

Allow POP clients

Check this option to allow POP clients to collect mail from the i-Mail server. POP clients may be Netscape, inbox and other popular mail client packages.

This option should be disabled if i-Mail is being used as a router and/or is not the primary mail server on the server on which it is running.

Allow SMTP clients

Check this option to allow mail clients to send mail to the i-Mail server. This includes both mail users and foreign e-mail systems which use i-Mail as a forwarding router.

Enable POP collect

Check this option to enable i-Mail to collect mail from the internet.

Enable Local SMTP

Check this option to enable the remote host connector. This option should be switched off if you are not using i-Mail to forward messages to another e-mail system which is locally or permanently connected.

Enable ETRN server

Check this option to enable ETRN server functionality. See the 'ETRN tab' for more details on this feature.

Enable ETRN client

Check this option to enable the ETRN download facility. See the 'ETRN tab' for more details on this feature.

Enable External SMTP

Check this option to enable i-Mail to send mail to the internet. This option should be turned off if i-Mail is being used to process inbound internet mail for a different mail system that sends mail to the internet itself.

TCP Ports

Bind to all server IP address / Bind to ip address

Select bind to all addresses to allow connection to i-Mail on any bound TCP/IP address on the server.
Select Bind to address either if you already have an e-mail server running the POP3 protocol on this server and/or you specifically want clients to connect using a specific network address on your network.

Collect POP mail on port ‘x’

Default: 110

Specify the TCP port which mail is collected from the internet on.

Clients get POP mail on port ‘x’

Default: 110

Specify the TCP port which clients collected mail on.

Send SMTP mail on port ‘x’

Default: 25

Specify the TCP port which mail is sent to the internet on.

Clients send SMTP mail on port ‘x’

Default: 25

Specify the TCP port which clients send mail on.

Make DNS connections on port 'x'

Default: 53

Specify the port which DNS calls should be made on.

Connections

Maximum Domain POP collectors

Default: 10

Specify the maximum number of connections that can occur at one. This option allows you to limit usage of internet connectors through a router. If you have more POP collectors that have been specified here, they will be queued until a slot becomes available.

Maximum POP client connections

Default: 100

Specify the maximum number of POP clients that can retrieve mail at any given time. This should generally be the number of PC’s in your company that will receive mail, either internally or externally.

Maximum outbound SMTP connections

Default: 5

Specify the maximum number of outbound connections that can be active to the internet at any given time.

Maximum SMTP client connections

Default: 100

Specify the maximum number of SMTP clients that can send mail at any given time. This should generally be the number of PC’s in your company that will send mail, either internally or externally.

POP client secured access / SMTP client secured access

Use these buttons to access advanced TCP/IP address based security for allowing or denying access to your i-Mail server.

SMTP anti-relay security

To prevent unauthorised use of your i-Mail server as a mail relay, this feature allows you to specify IP addresses to allow or deny access for accepting mail. Essentially this enables sending mail to domains specified in the Domains Tab from anywhere, but only allows sending to external recipients from authorised IP addresses or networks. For example, a user on another mail system may have been set a 5Mb limit at their ISP but they know your public mail server IP address so can send their 7Mb file via your mail server. Anti-relay prevents this as the incoming client IP is not on the authorised list and therefor not allowed to route mail.

Anti-spam security

See this page for details on the i-MailDS Antispam system

Timeouts

POP collection times out after x minutes of inactivity

Default: 10

Specify the maximum time i-Mail will allow a POP collector to have an absence of data before assuming the link has died, and terminating it.

SMTP sending times out after x minutes of inactivity

Default: 10

Specify the maximum time i-Mail will allow an SMTP send process to have an absence of data before assuming the link has died, and terminating it.

User connections time out after x minutes of inactivity

Default: 10

Specify the maximum time i-Mail will allow a client connection to have an absence of data before assuming the link has died, and terminating it.

DNS connections time out after x minutes

Default: 3

Specify the maximum time i-Mail will allow before assuming a DNS connection has failed.

Retry failed TCP connections x times

Default: 3

Specify the number of times i-Mail should attempt to connect to another mail server before stopping and rescheduling for the next process run.

DNS Services

DNS Server 1, 2 and 3

Specify up two three DNS servers if using MX record lookup functionality. If you are routing mail to a defined host, as configured in the POP/SMTP connectors tab these can be left blank.

DNS Transport

Default: UDP

Specify the type of connection to use when performing DNS calls.
