About Rapid Phone

The Rapid Phone client utility is as a quick and easy utility for sending phone messages. Because of its limited, yet functional, operation Rapid Phone is very small and loads into memory very quickly.

Requirements

Windows 95 or NT
TCPIP protocol

To use HTML enhanced messages, the Wingdings font should be available on recipient computers

Installation

Rapid Phone does not require any special setup program to be run on the workstation.

The first time Rapid Phone is loaded you will be asked if you want to configure the options. These options must be set before mail can be sent

Using Rapid Phone

To send a message, type the recipients e-mail address in the 'To' box, add details to the rest of the dialog as required and click 'Send'.

If you want to keep Rapid Phone on your desktop for quick access, check the 'Load new pad after sending' button.

If you have configured a default domain under options, simply typing in the recipients name is sufficient for the 'To' line. For example, if your default domain is company.com and you want to send a message to rsmith@company.com simply type rsmith and Rapid Phone will fill out the rest.

Configuring Rapid Phone

Rapid Phone must be configured before it will allow you to send e-mail messages. The required fields are your name, your e-mail address, and your outbound mail server.

Normally you would set the Default Domain to your own company domain which facilitates quick sending of mail to other users in your organisation.

In the check box defaults, enter the most common set of options for your use of Rapid Phone. These will be entered each time Rapic Phone is started.

By selecting minimize message pad, Rapid Phone is conveniently sent to the task bar (when reload pad is ticked) after sending a message and you are returned to the previous application that you were using.

If your mail recipients are using e-mail clients that can interpret HTML codes, Rapid Phone can additionally format your message in a familiar memo pad format.

Using Configuration Files

Rapid Phone can be run with an optional configuration file. To do this, run the Rapid Phone program and specify the path to the configuration file.

For example, create a file called RPHONE.CFG in the F:\PUBLIC directory and run Rapid Phone with the line RPHONE32 RPHONE.CFG.

This will tell Rapid Phone to overwrite any registry settings with those stored in the config file.

The parameters available in the configuration file are: Parameter Value
Full Name Text string
EMail Address Text string
Default Domain Text string
SMTP Server IP address
SMTP Port IP Port (default=25)

Setup Tips

It is useful to set up a short cut key for Windows to run Rapid Phone so that access does not require tedious menu selections and program changes.

In Windows 95 and Windows NT 4, create a shortcut to RPHONE32.EXE either on your desktop or in your Start menu. Select the properties for this shortcut and select the 'Shortcut' tab. Add a shortcut key sequence such as CTRL-SHIFT-P. Now wherever you are, just press this key sequence to send a quick e-mail.
