User Link Tab

(important notes below*)

Purpose

This tab configures how i-Mail will interface with NetWare user accounts and what permissions and features users will get when using e-mail.

User Link Defaults

NetNotify

When a new user account is created by i-Mail, this wil be the Notification setting.

On forward, copy original

This setting determines whether mail is copied to the local users mail account as well as the forwarded recipient when forwarding is turned on. Forwarding is always disabled by default and can be turned on via a message to 'iMailServer@company.com' as described in the first welcome message that the user receives.

Create welcome message

When a new user connects to i-Mail, an initial welcome message can be automatically created. You can also create your own welcome message by creating a text file called 'WELCOME.MSG' and storing it in the i-Mail 'config' directory.

Auto create users when mail arrives

On a new i-Mail system that is using 'UserLink' no user mail directories exist. When a user first connects to i-Mail as a POP client and has the right credentials i-Mail creates the account. This means that any mail sent to the user will not be delivered to the user until they have logged in, but will instead be diverted to the PostMaster as a message which could not be delivered. By turning this option on, mail which is delivered to any valid NetWare user will be delivered to that account. If the account does not exist then it will be created. If you do not want all users on your network to receive mail or wish to keep reasonable control over mail delvery, this option should be turned off and all users should be logged in when the system is set up to create their accounts. Auto creation of accounts is subject to the NetWare Group access control, users will not be created if access control is configured.

Enable NetWare groups as mail lists

By enabling this option you can send a message to a group defined within NDS and the message will be sent to all members of that group. This feature only works for locally sent mail, messages collected from the internet will not be replicated to NetWare groups.

Access Control

NetWare Groups

These groups control access to your i-Mail system. By default no groups are configured for access and all NetWare users are allowed to use the mail services. By adding group access control you can determine who will be allowed to log in and also never need to use the i-Mail administration utility for user creation and control. It is recommended that you create a separate group on your NetWare server and/or a template user which allows or denies appropriate users access to mail services.

Allow i-Mail access

This option determines whether users of this group are allowed to be created when they access the server.

Allow user update

Group members with this option turned on can update their user account details such as notification status, full name and password. With this option enabled the welcome message will include instructions on how to update the account using e-mail.

Enable password update

This additional option allows control over users ability to update their password. When a user updates their Full Name or Password in i-Mail, they are also updating their NetWare logon account.

NetWare Users Registered With i-Mail

This option is only applicable to non-unlimited editions of i-Mail. i-Mail will only service up to the licenced number of accounts on the system. This is made up of, firstly, the users defined and enabled in the user accounts tab, plus the users in the user link tab. As soon as the limit is reached i-Mail discards all further accounts. As users log into i-Mail they are automatically given accounts, assuming permission has been granted, as they will show up here in the order which i-Mail reads them in for service. If you exceed the licence limit and need to allow different users into i-Mail, you can delete the link entry here. The next time a user connects they will be appended to the end of the list.

Concepts

i-Mail has the capability of directly interfacing with NetWare users as well as maintaining its own user accounts. This enables mail systems which can be integrated with your network while providing other services such as mail lists, automatic printing and external users without impacting on the design of your network.

If you are using the i-Mail integration of NetWare users you should not need to administer the mail server other than to configure additional services which you may use. It is expected that you will manage mail use via a NetWare groups similar to those in the example graphic. The i-Mail system will maintain itself as and when you add and delete users from the network.

IMPORTANT NOTE 1: User Link is turned on and off on the User Accounts tab. Set the 'Use NetWare users for mail login' to the appropriate setting.

IMPORTANT NOTE 2: You should always log the PostMaster in immediately so that misdirected mail has a destination. The PostMaster is generally created as an alias in the Alias Tab to the mail system administrator name.
